Category C1 + E   -   Simple explanation!(?)

If you passed your test before 1st Jan 1997 you will already have the Category C1, C1 + E with a maximum combined weight of 8.25 tonnes. If you want to drive a vehicle with a combined weight of over 8.25 tonnes but under 12 tonnes you will need the C1 + E Category.

If you passed your test after 1st Jan 1997 you have only B Category (car) on your licence and you can only pull a trailer of up to 750kg in weight with a car weight of 3.5 tonnes - giving a combination of 4.25 tonnes

OR

a trailer over 750kg MAM* provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

If you are a car 'B' Category licence holder and wish to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer combination weight of up to 12 tonnes you will need to be over 18 years of age, take a C1 test and then a C1 + E test.

N.B. It is not the actual weight of the vehicle/trailer on a weighbridge but what the weight of the vehicle/trailer is plated at that counts!
